The Town of La Plata reported more than 60 permit violations at its wastewater treatment plant, spanning July 2019 through July 2024. Identified exceedances included total nitrogen, ammonia‑nitrogen, suspended solids, and coliform bacteria, some linked to disinfection system failures.

Town Manager Chuck Stevens reassured residents that drinking water remains safe despite these noncompliance. Ongoing upgrades—motivated by Maryland’s Enhanced Nutrient Removal (ENR) program and part of broader Bay-area compliance efforts—are underway, aiming to resolve violations and enhance the plant’s treatment capacity.

CDM Smith is consulting on operational improvements while the Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE) continues oversight. A public update was scheduled for the July 29 Town Council meeting, underscoring local transparency in addressing wastewater challenges.
