In the wake of catastrophic flash floods in June and early July that claimed dozens of lives across the region, San Antonio and Bexar County unveiled a $20 million “Next Generation Flood Warning System and Resilient Infrastructure Program.”
The program taps real-time data from rain and stream gauges, enabling faster, more precise flood alerts for residents and first responders. The San Antonio River Authority will lead updates to floodplain modeling and oversight of the system post-deployment.
Infrastructure investments include automated low-water crossing barricades, comprehensive sensor maintenance (notably reactivating approximately 30 of 200 damaged gauges), and upgraded hydrometeorological monitoring. Public outreach is a key pillar—public education meetings will roll out over the next six months, followed by a region-wide flood awareness campaign in 2026.
Officials stressed that the overarching objective is to shift from reactive to proactive emergency response—seeking zero flood-related fatalities, and ensuring “pre‑responders” can act before waters rise dangerously.
