Lubbock, Texas, has taken a major step toward securing its long-term water future with the acquisition of key land for Lake 7, a planned reservoir central to the city’s 100-year water strategy. Mayor Mark McBrayer signed an agreement on Feb. 14 to purchase 1,500 acres from V8 Ranch, bringing the city’s land ownership for the project to over 85%.
Lake 7, to be located between Buffalo Springs Lake and East 50th Street, will serve as a renewable water source while also providing recreational opportunities.
- The next phase involves obtaining a Clean Water Act permit from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, a critical regulatory hurdle before construction can move forward.
The project remains on track for completion by 2032, when the reservoir is expected to begin impounding water. City officials have framed the acquisition as a necessary investment in water security, ensuring Lubbock’s long-term resilience amid increasing demand and climate uncertainties.
