
A hyperscale AI data center campus under development in West Texas will get a dedicated, integrated water and wastewater system designed for zero discharge to surface water.
Gradiant announced Sept. 2 that it secured a contract to deliver the campus’s full turnkey water package, including potable water production and wastewater treatment. The customer was not identified, though Gradiant described it as one of the world’s largest hyperscalers and said the campus is part of a broader multibillion-dollar AI infrastructure investment underway in the region. The contract value, exact location, treatment capacity and completion date were not disclosed.
The project will use Gradiant’s HyperSolved platform, which integrates water treatment technologies with its CURE Chemicals program and SmartOps, an AI-powered system that monitors and optimizes water operations in real time. HyperSolved is designed to manage the full cooling-water lifecycle and can treat sources including municipal effluent and groundwater using high-recovery technologies to reduce freshwater demand and liquid waste. Gradiant has not disclosed which source water the West Texas campus will use.
The zero-surface-discharge requirement is particularly notable in water-constrained West Texas. Gradiant says the system is being designed to avoid treated wastewater discharges to surface waters, although it has not disclosed how residual waste streams will ultimately be managed.
For utilities, the project offers another indication of how the data center water model may be evolving. Instead of relying solely on existing municipal water and wastewater capacity, hyperscale developments can incorporate purpose-built treatment, alternative water sources and high-recovery systems directly into the campus. The West Texas project does not, however, establish that the campus will operate independently of municipal water supplies; its actual source-water mix remains undisclosed.
