A new update to the Environmental Working Group’s Tap Water Database reveals that millions of Americans are consuming drinking water contaminated with harmful chemicals, heavy metals, and radioactive substances—many at levels well above what scientists consider safe.
- The analysis, based on data from nearly 50,000 water systems (2021-2023), identified 324 contaminants, including PFAS (“forever chemicals”), hexavalent chromium (chromium-6), arsenic, and volatile organic compounds—all linked to serious health risks.
While most contaminants fall within outdated EPA legal limits, they often exceed EWG’s health-based standards, highlighting gaps in federal regulations. The database allows consumers to check local water quality by ZIP code and find recommendations for water filtration solutions.
Despite some progress, including the Biden administration’s first drinking water standards for six PFAS chemicals, EWG warns that federal protections remain inadequate and could be weakened under future administrations. Advocates urge stronger, science-based regulations to safeguard public health and prevent further contamination.
